The future president of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.

Contentious Posts

The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a university in Utah.

According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The announcement stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The letter criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had earlier condemned the student's comments after the activist's killing and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
